Teachers models, 1:36
The larger scale models (1:36) were referred to as 'Teachers models'. Authenticast offered Teachers models for all the Japanese tanks and for all but two British tanks (the Cromwell and later model Churchill MK VII). Thanks to Ed for the pictures of these models!
Authenticast tanks are heavy cast metal models manufactured by Comet Metal Products of Richmond Hills, NY in the 40's, 50's and 60's. They were originally used as identification models for the military. The 'typical' scale for the tanks is 1:108 (15 mm). Teachers models were also made at a larger scale, 1:36. Unboxed models can be found for $10-$30. Boxed go for about $30 and up. The last release tend to be much more rare, and can go for several hundred dollars.
Tank and Soldier Sets: Authenticast also released Soldier and Tank sets:
| Set | Description |
| PT-1 | Parade tank unit: 1 tank with man in turret, colored guidon, marching soldiers |
| CR-1 | Combat Recon tank group: 1 tank with man in turret, infantry with mine detectors, riflemen, machine gunners, bazooka |

In addition to tanks and other ground vehicles, Comet also made warship ID and some airplane ID models. They also manufactured soldiers and HO railroad figures and accessories. You can also find more information on my Comet Metal Products page
These models are very similar to the Denzil Skinner models released in the early 1980's. Got to my Denzil Skinner page for a one to one comparison!
Comet Metal Products was formed in 1919 by Abraham Slonim. In the 1930's Slonim started making metal soldiers, and attempted to interest the military in using diecast models as identification models. With the advent of WWII, Comet was commissioned by the US government to manufacture identification models for ships, planes, trucks. It is widely reported that from 1941-1945 Comet made more than 10,000,000 models of military items (Kurtz and Ehrlich, The Art of the Toy Soldier, Abbeville Press, 1987). In 1945 Comet released these models to the public under the Authenticast name. The inaugural catalog (steelnavy.com) speaks the extreme accuracy of the models, and how details of the models had been classified by the government. Comet continued to produce the models until 1962, when the company was sold? (or went out of business). According to S. Berliner III the molds eventually made their way into the hands of Chuck Cook at Quality Castings, and finally to 19th Century Miniatures.

Finally, an excellent article on Comet can be purchased from the archives of the New York Times: Little Plant Is Turning Out a U.S. Arsenal, Alexander R. Hammer, The New York Times, September 13, 1959, page F1. The article can be purchased from the Times online archive.
The models were shipped in boxes very similar to the Authenticast ships. These were wood boxes, light blue or gray, usually labeled for the branch of service to which they were sent. The tanks were screwed to wooden planks, inserted into the boxes. The tank type was printed on the underside of the plank.
Post war, the models were individually packaged in the characteristic red and blue cardboard boxes. The tanks were wrapped in tissue paper.
Authenticast tanks also were sold in sets with soldiers. Pictured above is a Stuart tank with Figures. At least one other soldier and tank set was sold. The 1959 catalog (number 6) featured a M47 Patton and soldiers. Thanks to Tom C. for the photos!
Finally, some of the late models (usually the missiles), appear to have been packaged in the green and yellow Authenticast boxes.

Quality Castings Issues/Reissues
|
|
Quality Castings Inc. 15mm Miniatures |
Quality Castings continued making models from the original casts, but with time, modifications started to creep in. Most characteristic were the treads (or wheels) and hull being cast as a single piece. Typically (but not in all cases), Authenticast treads were cast separately from the hull, and then attached to the hull (a tack weld(?) can typically be seen). The wheels on Authenticast wheeled vehicles are typically attached with an axle. Re-issues are cast as part of the vehicle (see the 8 wheeled car, above).
Quality Castings not only reissued many of the models, but it also issued new models, such as the Wespe seen above. These models utilized some of the original Authenticast moulds, and thus have the Comet name on the bottom.
Below is a partial listing of Quality Castings Vehicles (from Dan Johnson, Toy Car Collectors Guide, Collector Books, 2002, pg 54)
