Benbros Tanks
Benbros made a series of diecast vehicles in
the 1950's and 1960's, including 7 military vehicles. The one
tank produced is a Centurion, and is small scale, approximately
1:120 (?). Two releases are made: the TV series, made in the mid
50's, features a box with television. The second release was in
the late 50's. The tank was reboxed under the "Mighty
Midget" name. The TV series tank is gloss Olive green, the
Mighty Midget tank is a lighter gloss green. Both have light
green rubber treads.
Please note that the "Mighty Midget" tanks from
Benbros should not to be confused with the "Mighty
Midget" tanks imported to the USA by Borgfeldt & Co. of New York. Borgfeldt imported
tanks manufactured by TinToys. TinToys tanks had black treads and
had four wheels in the base allowing the tank to roll. Please see my
Company overview
The company was started in the late 40's by Nathan and Jack Beneson (the Beneson brothers or.....Benbros! Also spelled "Benninson" according to other sources....). Benbros "Qualitoys" were manufactured in England, and competed with the Lesney lineup (Lesney was later to become Matchbox). The created the The TV series in 1954. In the late 50's the series was renamed/reboxed as the "Mighty Midgets". Benbros also manufactured a line of toy soldiers and figures, including Cowboys and Indians and Robin Hood figures.
