Tomy is a Japanese company which has been in business since the 1924. It is the second largest toy company in Japan and the fifth largest in the world.
Tomy has manufactured diecast under the name Tomy and Tomica. The majority of the diecast appear to be under the Tomica brand name. Tomica diecast were first manufactured in1970.
These tanks pictured here were manufactured circa 1974 under the TOMY/TOMICA brand. These tanks are HEAVY metal diecast with very nice, fine detail on the hull and turret. The accessories (machine gun, antenna, etc.) are well crafted. The hull is held together by screws (not rivets), and the turrets freely and smoothly rotate (even after 30 years). The tracks are real rubber.
The tanks came as both unpainted metal kits and as preassembled and painted models.
have eight in my collection. The US tanks (M60. M60A1E1, Walker Bulldog, and an M42) are finished in flat olive drab, and have a nice decal set. The Tiger is unpainted, but has a tan base, running wheels and gun. The Centurion is tan, and MIGHT be a repaint. Finally the Type 61 is olive green and also has a nice decal set.
I had seen more than one model of these tanks in bare-metal condition (unpainted). It made me wonder if some had been offered in a 'kit' format. Recently I acquired an unassembled diecast metal kit of the SU-85 Russian Tank Destroyer (reproduced in 1/87 scale), made by Tomy in the early 1970's (Item No. 8506). The kit includes metal body, plastic cannon, wheels and treads, decals and 5 soldiers. The tank assembles with screws. This explains the variable quality of the paint on some of the tanks.
In addition to kits, the models also came preassembled, under the "Combat Tomica" label. The tank came with 5 figures, snap on wheels, and decals.
Vic Davey sent me the following information on Tomica Tanks. This is great compilation, and confirms that these tanks were released in both completed and Kit format.
"Just a few additions to your listings, feel free to broadcast them, with credits to myself - the table is mostly self-explanatory. The 'x' in the 'got' column indicates the extent of my ownership. My collection still has a few gaps. Some of the 'Combat Tomica' are illustrated in my book 'The Complete World of Tomy Diecast', published in Hong Kong by Northcord Limited, and still available from Danny S Y Chan, my co-author/publisher. If you have a spare Centurion, either kit or ready-built, I am in the market for one. Regards Vic Davey" Thanks Vic!
